How long temporary residence is granted for
Temporary residence is issued for a fixed period tied to your ground, and reforms in recent years extended the maximum term considerably compared with the old one-year-at-a-time regime. The permit will not necessarily be granted for the maximum available period. The authority can and does issue for shorter, particularly on a first application.

Applying through the unified permit system
Serbia moved residence and work authorisation onto a combined footing, so employed applicants deal with one application covering both rather than two separate processes. Applications and fee payment run through the government's foreigners portal, which then allocates an in-person appointment.
The portal is the official channel, and applications submitted through it are tracked with a reference you can follow. Keep that reference. It is what any subsequent enquiry will be based on.
Renewal timing, and the gap that catches people
Renewal is not a formality and it is not something to begin in the final fortnight. The application should be submitted while the current permit is still valid, with enough margin that a request for an additional document does not push you past expiry.
The reason this matters beyond the immediate inconvenience: qualification for permanent residence depends on continuous residence. A lapse, even a short one that is later regularised, can reset a clock you have been running for years. People discover this at the three-year mark, which is exactly the wrong moment to discover it.
When the police request an interview
Most applications are decided on the file. Sometimes the police administration asks the applicant to attend and answer questions, commonly where the ground is family reunification, or where something in the file is inconsistent.
An interview request is not an accusation and it is not a refusal. It is a request for clarification, and it is answered by turning up with the documents that resolve the inconsistency.
